Director James Gunn and actor Sylvester Stallone must have enjoyed working together on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. That's because the Rocky and Rambo star has now been drafted into appearing in The Suicide Squad, Gunn's DC comic book reboot.
In an Instagram post, the always gracious Gunn called out Stallone for being a friend and also "a great actor". Of course, there's no word as to who Stallone will be playing, but we'll stay tuned.
In a since-deleted post of his own, Stallone lauded the movie as "spectacular". Given he's crossed the all-important Marvel/DC divide for the director, we'd like to think so.
Gunn wipes the slate clean of the critically derided 2016 movie, while retaining several of the major cast members. Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn is back to cause more exuberant chaos, with new cast members including Idris Elba, John Cena, Taika Waititi, Nathan Fillion and Peter Capaldi.
Our first look at The Suicide Squad came during the August 2020 DC FanDome event. We're certainly hoping for a more spirited and enjoyably anarchic experience than the original movie – Gunn's own experience with the Guardians of the Galaxy series surely augurs well.
On that note, it's been confirmed that Chris Pratt's Star-Lord will appear in Thor: Love and Thunder. We've no idea how the various Guardians/Thor strands will tie up, but it's an important step in the development of Marvel's Phase Four slate.
So, what about Guardians Vol. 3? The movie has been caught up in various troubles and delays, from Gunn's initial firing (which led him to The Suicide Squad in the first place) and subsequent rehiring, to the chaos initiated by the COVID-19 pandemic. We expect it to be a key film in Marvel Phase Five, although the release date is unconfirmed.
