News of the World: watch Tom Hanks in the first trailer

Some seven years after their gripping collaboration on Captain Phillips, director Paul Greengrass and star Tom Hanks are back together. Only this time, they've swapped a high-seas hijacking for a dusty, Western-set story of redemption and violence. And the first trailer has cantered online.

Hanks plays Civil War Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd. He's tasked with transporting a young girl, kidnapped by the Kiowa people, across hostile terrain to where her family are waiting. The film is adapted from Paulette Jiles' book of the same name by Oscar nominated Lion writer Luke Davies, and marks a departure of sorts for British filmmaker Greengrass. He's ordinarily rooted in contemporary paranoia and suspense (Bourne; Green Zone; Captain Phillips et al), and it will be intriguing to see him saddle up for this quintessentially American genre.

The young girl in question is played by newcomer Helena Zengel, and across the board, Greengrass has switched up many of his regular collaborators. Pirates of the Caribbean's Dariusz Wolski is the cinematographer, replacing Greengrass favourite Barry Ackroyd. And composer James Newton Howard is writing the score, having already penned a stirring Western accompaniment to 1994's Wyatt Earp, starring Kevin Costner.

Not that we're expecting a romanticised vision of the Old West – with Greengrass in charge, we can no doubt expect something grittier and harder-edged. Still, if you wanted anyone to transport across the American plains, it's Tom Hanks, right? Check out the trailer below.
