Movie trailer round-up: previews of films coming soon

In your first instalment of our movie trailer round-up, we're looking ahead to some of the exciting movies scheduled for release soon.

This week, we have Disney adventures, musical adaptations and Oscar-buzzed dramas. Scroll down to find out more.

1. Everybody's Talking About Jamie

Due for release 26th February 2021

Stage smash Everybody's Talking About Jamie has inspired audiences around the world. And the incoming film adaptation is set to expand the reach of this infectious story about following one's dream. The story is based on documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, and focuses on the title character's journey to escape his stifling background and strut his way onto the London catwalk.

Co-creator of the original musical, Jonathan Butterell, is behind the camera, and newcomer Max Harwood plays the determined Jamie. The real scene-stealer, however, is bound to be veteran Richard E. Grant, portraying diva drag artist Loco Chanelle. Composer Dan Gillespie Sells' music for the original stage production was nominated for an Olivier award (four other nominations were also counted), and promises to make a rousing translation onto the big screen.

2. Raya and the Last Dragon

Due for release 12th March 2021

Disney Animation Studios comes roaring back with this original story of one brave warrior's quest to find the last remaining dragon in the kingdom. Star Wars actor Kelly Marie Tran voices the noble Raya, whose mystical home of Kumandra is under threat. Where once people lived in harmony with dragons, now the union has fallen into disrepair, and division reigns. Raya must undertake a perilous odyssey with her adorable sidekick Tuk-Tuk to locate the fabled Sisu (Crazy Rich Asians' Awkwafina) and restore balance to her world.

Judging from the first trailer, we can expect luscious visuals that soak up the wonder and awe of the story's ancient Chinese settings. With its two central voice stars, Raya and the Last Dragon is staking out greater diversity within the Disney canon, as directors Don Hall (Big Hero 6) and Carlos Lopez Estrada bring us a sure-to-be-rousing adventure.

3. Ammonite

Due for release TBC

God's Own Country director Francis Lee returns with this sensitive romance, set on the wind-lashed Lyme Regis coast in the 19th century. Ammonite mixes fact and fiction in its look at real-life paleontologist Mary Anning (a superb Kate Winslet) who embarks on a tentative affair with upper-class society woman Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan). The film re-imagines Anning's life story, carving out a tender LGBTQ romance while also exploring her isolation from the male-oriented world of geology.

Lee scored a huge critical hit with God's Own Country, his Yorkshire-set tale of love between two men. With towering performers Winslet and Ronan and its centre, Ammonite may well unearth awards glory at the 2021 Oscars. The film recently closed the 2020 BFI London Film Festival, so already comes loaded with prestige, and may well emerge as a frontrunner.
