We're still coming to terms with the events of Avengers: Infinity War, although we won't get the answers we crave until next year's Avengers 4. That movie will initiate Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), one poised to bring all manner of changes to the superhero series.
Initially, Marvel's slate of Phase Four films, nine of them in total, extended well into 2022. However, studio president Kevin Feige recently confirmed that we'll be getting MCU movies until at least 2025. The next stage of the MCU is currently shrouded in mystery, although we can expect the likes of Spider-Man Homecoming 2 (released in 2019), Black Panther 2 (TBC) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2020) to make an appearance.
And if you thought the standalone Avengers movies were ending with Avengers 4, think again. That's because Disney CEO Bob Iger has hinted we may well be getting more in future.
"We meet on a regular basis with our Marvel team, and we've plotted out Marvel movies that will take us well into the next decade," The Hollywood Reporter quotes Iger as saying. "I'm guessing we will try our hand at what I'll call a new franchise beyond Avengers, but that doesn't necessarily mean you won't see more Avengers down the road. We just haven't made any announcements about that."
He adds that "given the popularity of the characters and given the popularity of the franchise, I don't think people should conclude there will never be another Avengers movie".
Iger also said that we'll see a "significant conclusion" to a story that began with the first Iron Man movie, although he didn't spill any more details. In the meantime, Ant-Man and the Wasp heads our way on 4th August, followed by the debut of Brie Larson's Captain Marvel in the film of the same name on 8th March 2019.
