Things aren't so great downtown in Edgar Wright's creepy new psychological chiller, Last Night in Soho. Fresh from its Venice Film Festival premiere (check out the reactions here), this sixties-set tale of time travel and murderous intrigue (co-written with 1917's Krysty Wilson-Cairns) promises to chill the blood when it arrives in October.
A new trailer teases the set-up: country girl Eloise (Jojo Rabbit's Thomasin Mackenzie) aspires to a fashion designer job in the big city. Newly arrived in London, and with her head filled with dreams of 1960s couture, Eloise appears to have it made. That is, until she escapes in her dreams into an alternate reality, where she takes on the role of 1960s nightclub singer Sandy (The Queen's Gambit's Anya Taylor-Joy).
Soon addicted to this temporal shift, Eloise relishes the escape that comes with being in Sandy's body. But there's a dark twist coming in the form of Matt Smith's mysterious playboy, who hangs menacingly around Soho as an older man (played by screen veteran Terence Stamp). Expect a cocktail of retro nostalgia (watch out for that Thunderball poster), supernatural menace and hair and costumes to die for.
Wright has built a career off the back of his favourite genre influences (the zombie movie in Shaun of the Dead being a famous example). And Last Night in Soho channels the queasily enjoyable menace of suspense masters including Dario Argento, Roman Polanski and Alfred Hitchcock, putting them all into a blender before adding a signature Wright twist.
Last Night in Soho is released on 29th October.
