Jude Law in talks to play Captain Hook in Disney's Peter Pan and Wendy

J.M. Barrie's beloved Peter Pan stories have been treated to umpteen cinematic adaptations, from Disney's 1953 animation to Steven Spielberg's Hook. And very soon, we're getting another, as Disney gears up for Peter Pan & Wendy.

Director David Lowery, who remade the studio's Pete's Dragon to marvellous effect in 2016, will be helming the project. The movie purports to be a live-action remake of the 1953 classic, with a script written by Lowery and regular collaborator Toby Halbrooks, with whom he's worked on Pete's Dragon, A Ghost Story and Ain't Them Bodies Saints.

Variety reports that Captain Marvel and Fantastic Beasts star Jude Law is gearing up to play the cackling, fiendish Captain Hook in the movie. If Law signs on the dotted line, he'll be following in the footsteps of Dustin Hoffman (Hook), Garrett Hedlund (who played a proto-version of the character in 2015 prequel Pan) and others. Let's not also forget the underrated 2003 take from director P.J. Hogan, which had a memorably nasty Jason Isaacs in the role of Hook. (He also doubled up as Mr. Darling.)

The movie is reportedly aiming for a theatrical release, although no date has been confirmed yet. In the meantime, David Lowery is next tackling British Arthurian myth in The Green Knight, starring Dev Patel. The movie was scheduled for a 2020 release but is currently awaiting a new slot following the COVID-19 chaos. Law, meanwhile, will be reprising his role as the younger, more sprightly Albus Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts 3, tentatively set for release in 2021.
