The name's Cavill. Henry Cavill. While speculation rages as to who will become the next James Bond, the star of Mission: Impossible - Fallout and The Witcher has thrown his hat into the ring (or, to use a more appropriate Bond analogy, onto the hatstand).
In an interview with GQ Magazine, Cavill has expressed his enthusiasm about becoming the new 007. He would take over from current incumbent Daniel Craig whose final Bond movie, No Time To Die, is scheduled to hit us on 12th November. (At the time of writing.)
"If Barbara [Bond producer Barbara Broccoli] and Mike [co-producer Michael G. Wilson] were interested in that, I would absolutely jump at the opportunity," Cavill said. "At this stage, it’s all up in the air. We’ll see what happens. But yes, I would love to play Bond, it would be very, very exciting."
Cavill has already done a 007 dry run with his performance in 2015's The Man From UNCLE. Although a Guy Ritchie box office flop, it did showcase a delightfully suave and confident performance from the actor as debonair American spy Napoleon Solo.
Other hotly tipped contenders have included Tom Hardy, Idris Elba and James Norton, although nothing is likely to be confirmed until No Time To Die has reached us.
The 25th James Bond movie, No Time To Die pits Craig's 007 against Rami Malek's evil Safin. It's poised to send Craig out in style, with not one, but two, returning Aston Martins, the input of screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge and a pair of intriguing-looking new characters. These are Lashana Lynch's Nomi, a new 00 agent, and Ana De Armas' fellow operative Paloma. The rumour mill has gone into overdrive with the suggestion that Lynch's character may well spearhead the next installment of the Bond franchise.
