Old faces re-emerge from the shadows in the new trailer for Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga. The automotive extravaganza is revving up for a theatrical debut this July – what better way to blow away the lockdown cobwebs than with a roaring V8 engine? Of course, it's increasingly hard to distinguish the sound of such things from the unmistakable growl of Vin Diesel.
Inventive carjacker Dom Toretto (who is, by the point, essentially a superhero) is still moralising about the importance of family in-between bouts of earnest, slow-motion close-ups. However, when his thought-to-be-lost-brother Jakob (John Cena) turns up, Dom is forced to question his whole family philosophy. What does it mean when a blood relative turns against you?
In this case, it means the expected onslaught of insane set-pieces, including magnets and cars attached to the underside of jets. (It's surely only a matter of time before these guys go to space.) Plenty of familiar names show up, including Michelle Rodriguez' Letty and Ludacris' Tej. But the most significant is Han (Sung Kang), another character who was thought to be dead. He appears to have reinvented himself as an ace sniper – good luck explaining that one away.
Helen Mirren also makes a welcome re-appearance as the crime-loving mother of Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw. However, both the latter and his partner, Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) are absent from this instalment, fuelled by reported on-set enmity during Fast & Furious 8. This helped to propel both characters into their own Hobbs & Shaw spin-off in 2019.
Series veteran Justin Lin is helming, so we can expect a firm grip on the physics-defying action scenes. Diesel has set that Fast & Furious will come to the end of the road in Fast & Furious 10 and Fast & Furious 11, both due to be directed by Justin Lin – what could possibly be on offer?
Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga is due for release in UK and Ireland cinemas on the 24th of June 2021. Are you making a date with Dom and his crew? Let us know @Cineworld.
